(Show the picture of rainforest ) Say: The tropical rainforest biome is an ecosystem that covers about 7% of the Earth’s surface. It is known for its dense canopies of vegetation that form three different layers. The top layer or canopy contains giant trees. This layer of vegetation prevents much of the sunlight from reaching the ground. The middle layer, or understory, is made up of vines, smaller trees, ferns, and palms. The bottom layer or floor of the rainforest is covered with wet leaves and leaf litter.

(Show the picture of a gorilla ) Say: Gorillas are large, quiet, gentle apes; they are shy, peaceful vegetarians. Gorillas have very long arms (the arms are longer than the legs), and a short, bulky body with a wide chest. Gorillas have a very large head with a bulging forehead, tiny ears, and small, dark-brown eyes. Gorillas have no tail! Because of massive loss of habitat, these majestic primates are in great danger of going extinct.

(Show the picture of a sloth ) Say: The sloth is a slow-moving mammal that lives in trees. Sloths spend most of their lives hanging upside-down from tree branches. Sloths have a thick brown fur coat. They have a short, flat head, big eyes, a short snout, a short or non-existent tail, long legs, and tiny ears. Sturdy, curved claws are on each foot; they use these claws to hang from trees.

(Show the picture of a monkey ) Say: Monkeys live all over the world and come in various shapes, sizes and colors. As one of our closest relatives, these mammals are very intelligent; They can show love, anger, sadness, mourn the loss of loved ones, and even laugh. Monkeys use different noises, facial expressions and body movements to communicate with one another.

(Show the picture of a toucan ) Say: Toucans have short and thick necks. They are distinguished by large, colorful, yet lightweight bills. The bill is used to squash the many kinds of fruit and berries he eats. Their wings are short and they are only able to travel a short distance. Toucans are very important to the rainforest because they help to disperse seeds from the fruits and berries they eat.

(Show the picture of a macaw ) Say: Macaws are the largest species of parrot in the world. They have beautiful, graceful, tails that are longer than their bodies. Macaws have long, pointed wings that enable them to fly swiftly. Their sharp, hooked bills are perfect for eating nuts and seeds. These parrots are known to be intelligent and very sociable birds.

(Show the picture of a tiger ) Say: Tigers are the largest felines in the world. The Tiger has a long body, a short neck, and a firm head with a short muzzle that contains a set of sharp teeth. Tigers have distinctive stripes, which help camouflage them when hunting preys. Many cultures consider the tiger to be a symbol of strength and courage.

(Show the picture of a jaguar ) Say: The Jaguar is a large and muscular animal. It has a compact body, a broad head and powerful jaws. Its coat is normally yellow and tan. The spots on the coat are more solid and black on the head and neck and become larger rosette-shaped patterns along the side and back of the body. These beautiful and powerful beasts are quite good swimmers.

(Go back to the picture of rainforest) Say: Remember, because of the amount of trees in the tropical rainforest biome, it is responsible for the majority of the oxygen production in the air that we breathe.
