2+4=6

Prepare in advance 12 red cubes
Make 2 groups of red cubes. One group should consist of 2 cubes. Another group should consist of 4 cubes. The cubes in the groups should be scattered in a random order, not put in a straight line or row. The two groups should be located away from each other to make them distinctive groups but not too far from each other so that the baby can see two groups in one location. The other 6 cubes hide behind yours. Smile and say: Baby, let’s see which group is larger and which one is smaller. Let’s count cubes in each group. Place your hand above the first group on your left. Say: first let’s count the cubes in the group number one. Start counting by pointing your finger to each cube from left to right in the group number one. Say: 1,2. There are two cubes in this group (show two fingers). Place your hand above the second group on your right. Say: now let’s count the cubes in the group number two. Start counting by pointing your finger to each cube from left to right in the group number two. Say: 1,2,3,4 (show 4 fingers). Place your hand over the first group. Say: this group is smaller (show smaller with two open hands brought together). Smaller. Place your hand over the second group. Say: this group is larger (show larger by taking open hands away from each other). Larger. Let us add the first group to the second. Move the second group closer to the first and between the two groups put a “+” symbol, made of sticks or onion leaves. Put the “=” symbol after the second group. Say: let us see how much will be 2 (show 2 fingers) + 4 (show 4 fingers). Say: count with me. Point with your finger to each cube before the “=” symbol from left to right. Say: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6. Six (show six fingers)! There are six cubes. Put 6 red cubes you were hiding after the “=” symbol. Say: 2 (show two fingers) plus 4 (show four fingers) equals 6 (show six fingers).
