Prepare in advance 10 green cubes and a favorite toy animal of your baby.
Put 10 in one group in front of the baby. Say: let’s talk about subtraction. Look, we have some cubes. Let’s count them. Start counting by pointing to each cube: 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10. Show 10 fingers and say: ten! There are ten cubes. Here comes (toy) and takes away 5. Count 5 by pointing to each of the cubes and put them away in a separate group. Say: let us see how many we still have left with the baby. Count the cubes that are left by pointing to each of them: 1,2,3,4,5. Show 5 fingers and say: there are 5 cubes left with the baby. 10 minus 5 equals 5. Let’s also make a row of ten. Put all the cubes in one row counting them aloud. Show ten fingers and say they are 10! The (toy) takes away 5. Take 5 cubes from the row and put them next to the (toy). Let’s see how many the baby still has. Count the cubes of the baby by pointing to each of them from left to right: 1,2,3,4,5. The baby is left with 5 cubes. Let us also build a tower and make subtraction with it. Build a tower with ten cubes counting them aloud. Then say: the (toy) takes 5 away. Count 5 cubes from up down and place them next to the (toy). Say: how many does the baby still have? Let us count. Count them aloud pointing to each cube of the tower: 1,2,3,4,5. Five! Show 5 fingers and say Five. 10 minus 5 equals 5.
