starfish

Prepare a picture of/book about/a toy starfish in advance

Say: Look at this sea animal. (Show a picture of a starfish.) This is aquatic.

Remember, to be classified as aquatic, an animal should have scales, paired or unpaired fins to help them swim, and gills to breath under water. Aquatic animals that live in water are cold blooded, and have no legs or ears.

Sea stars are not fish as their nickname "starfish" suggests. They belong to a group of animals called echinoderms, which means "spiny skin”. Starfish are marine invertebrates that have a flattened body with their mouth located underneath their body. Their skin is rough and leathery and usually has spines. At the base of the spines are pincer-like structures called pedicellaria that protect the starfish from small animals or algae that might settle on the body surface. Most starfish are pentamerous, having five arms that radiate from a central disk.(let´s count its arms,1,2,3,4,5) Each arm has rows of tube feet that are used in crawling, attaching to things, and feeding. Starfish detect light with five purple eyespots at the end of each arm.

Beyond their distinctive shape, starfish are famous for their ability to regenerate limbs, and in some cases, entire bodies. They accomplish this by housing most or all of their vital organs in their arms. Some require the central body to be intact to regenerate, but a few species can grow an entirely new sea star just from a portion of a severed limb

Starfish are living things and need energy to survive. Starfish eat and digest food outside of their bodies. Most starfish are scavengers that mean they eat anything they can find. The Starfish can actually pull open a shell! If it finds a mussel or other mollusk it pulls open the shell and eats the inside, they do the same with shell fish and scallops. They have bony, calcified skin, which protects them from most predators, and many wear striking colors that camouflage them or scare off potential attackers. Reproduction is very interesting for the starfish. . Most species have both male and female body parts that allow them to create offspring without the aid of another. A moderate sized starfish is estimated to be able to produce 2.5 million eggs. . Only a small percentage of these young Starfish are able to survive to become adults that mate themselves.

All of the oceans around the world are home to the Starfish. They can only thrive in saltwater. They aren’t able to live in freshwater due to the amount of calcium that they need to create their bodies.

It is largely absent Mediterranean Sea. We need to take care of starfish and treat them with respect because they are living things just like us, people.
